Malcolm Sohm of Oshkosh, Wisconsin set out on August 28, 1999 to cross Lake Michigan in his pontoon boat! Along for
the 'ride' were Eric Brigham, Grant Gardner and Terry Kiser, also of Oshkosh. The four set out at 6:00 A.M. for the round trip from Strugeon Bay, WI to Frankfort MI. and back. Travel time was
approximately five hours for the entire trip. The weather was partly cloudy with winds out of the North/Northwest at 5-10 mph, gusting to 20 mph.
Seas were 2-4 feet increasing at times to 5-6 feet. This is believed to be the first successful crossing of Lake Michigan by a pontoon boat. But, this is no ordinary pontoon boat. This is a prototype build by Sohm with his patented fin system specifically designed to handle rough water conditions.
